NON-PROFIT WORKFORCE SECTOR STRATEGY REPORT

THE JAMES IRVING FOUNDATION

The Challenge

Worker shortages, burnout, racial and gender equity issues, and low job quality for frontline non-profit professionals is impacting the state’s ability to provide critical workforce development services to California residents.

Between April and July of 2022, Trailhead Strategies provided research and strategic consulting to develop goals, objectives, and metrics to inform government and foundation efforts to advance job quality for frontline nonprofit professionals in California. Major activities of the project included developing research questions, conducting qualitative interviews, analyzing labor market information, and developing 10 recommendations to advance job quality for frontline workforce professionals. Each recommendation included specific job quality input, output, and impact metrics the foundation can use to benchmark and measure progress on its effort to improve working conditions for California nonprofit professionals.
